Clase Azul follows the same traditional palenque distillation process as any other artisinal mezcal. One impressive point about this mezcal is that the agave is milled by hand, rather than using a donkey and tahona.
Clase Azul makes tequila and they one mezcal. Mezcal Clase Azul is made in the state of Durango where the extreme climate, the rich minerals of its soil, and the source of natural springs in the area, give particular force and complexity to its notes, making it a different mezcal than what is produced elsewhere Mexico.
As a fan of the Clase Azul tequila I was excited to try their mezcal, but it ended up being quite a let down. It has a flat taste — almost as if watered down, there are so many better mezcals out there especially for the price.
My absolute favorite Mezcal. Soft mineral notes and elegant smoke versus over-the-top, in your face smoke.Good.night : sunglasses store
Not this one! Beautiful hints of chocolate. A slice of orange on the side goes perfectly! I ordered it at a Mexican restaurant that also carried Mestizo, and considering the cost, I wish I had ordered the Mestizo. This is way over-priced, and I imagine most of the cost goes toward the fancy bottle.
There are way better mezcals to be ordered. This one is way too expensive and not good enough to warrant the cost. I had a sample of this at La Condesa — it was quite delicious!
I remember it having a bright, pleasant minerality and a light smokiness. It was pleasantly smooth all the way through the palate, yet it had some nice complexity as well. Register Log in. Then it is double-distilled in alembic copper stills. This 88 proof luxury joven mezcal has a complexity, unlike any other mezcal. Mezcal Clase Azul is super smooth and has pleasantly sweet hints of caramel and vanilla. Absolutely perfect for enjoying neat. Another unique aspect to any Clase Azul spirit is the beauty of their bottles and their mezcal is no exception.
The Mezcal Durango bottle is modeled after matte black clay pottery and has the texture like volcanic rock. The decanter, which is hand-carved by Mexican artisans, boasts a vibrant hand-beaded top. Ilegal Mezcal is not only a magnificent mezcal, but it has a spellbinding origin story. To supply his bar with plenty of mezcal, John would travel to the heart of mezcal country to get the beloved agave spirit.
John and a friend took the hour ride from Antigua, Guatemala to Oaxaca, Mexico. The two men attempted to smuggle about 60 bottles of mezcal from Mexico to Guatemala and he dressed like a priest because who would suspect a priest of smuggling 60 bottles of mezcal?
AroundRexer stopped smuggling in illegal mezcal from Mexico. John had spent a lot of time in Oaxaca in the s, so he knew where to find the good mezcal. He knew which producers made mezcal the right way and who treated their employees fairly.
He created his own brand named Ilegal Mezcal. The mezcal is slow-roasted in an earth pit with mesquite and eucalyptus for a wonderfully smokey flavor. Ilegal makes three different varieties of mezcal: an unaged joven, reposado and anejo Learn more about the differences HERE. The vanilla-hinted reposado is aged in medium-char American and French oak barrels for four months, while the anejo is aged for 14 months.
The anejo is unlike any other mezcal because it is less smokey and has a heavenly honey flavor with hints of orange and cocoa, but balanced with some slight spice, outstanding for sipping. The bottles have a cork top that is sealed with wax and each bottle is individually hand-numbered with the lot.

Since"Mezcal" was recognized as a Mexican Appellation of Origin, that means, it can be produced only in the following states:. The Cenizo agave from Durango takes between twelve and fifteen years for the plant to mature before it blooms and can be harvested to produce mezcal.
This method produces certain chemical reactions when sugars and proteins are combined, resulting in sweet notes of peanut, brown sugar, and honey.
On the other hand, the firewood and volcanic rock used to roast the hearts, generate enough heat to give it a smoky quality with notes of ash, wood, and chocolate. After several days, the roasted agaves are extracted from the ground and subsequently mashed by hand using only an axe.
Over several days, the naturally occurring yeast in the atmosphere intervenes to enrich the flavor of the mezcal adding notes of ripened fruit. Type: Joven in Mezcal, means un-aged. Cooking: Slow underground roasting of the agave hearts around 3 daysusing firewood and volcanic rock to roast the hearts to generate enough heat to give it a smoky quality.
Milling: Artisanal milling made by hand using only an axe. Fermentation: Using stone piles covered with red oak. Decanter: Ultra-fine ceramic in high temperature. Cap: Made with chaquira by people from Huichol culture. The lovely black, matte decanter in which Mezcal Clase Azul is presented, is hand-carved by artisans from a small community of Mazahua natives, named Santa Maria Canchesda, in the state of Mexico. The design of the bottle is inspired by black clay pottery, one of the most representative styles of Mexican folk art, whose detailed process enriches the beauty and quality of each piece.
In addition, its unique and colorful top is hand-crafted by artisans belonging to the Wixarika or Huichol culture. Each piece that a Huichol artisan creates, using beeswax, resin, a needle, and individually placed beads, in a special way represents their roots and their traditions that trace back to ancient times.

Clase Azul Tequila comes in beautiful tall hand sculpted and individually painted ceramic collector bottles, which may be nicer than the juice inside. There seems to be a lot of controversy over the use of a diffuser at some point in the production procedure, with this product as with others made at PFA NOM Many experts do not like the use of a diffuser, and this is a touchy and important issue to purists.
A diffuser is considered the microwave of cooking and it's normally used for mass production. I think many experienced tequila lovers may feel the same way, but I know many people who love it, so Clase Azul has a place for sure. I have been in contact with Arturo Lomeli, over the last few days and he has been very forthcoming. Think about that for a second. Anyway, he also addressed the sweet issue, as he is aware of it, but states "I always want to bring a different alternative to consumers", I like to say "We are not trying to be the best, we want to be different".
This bothers me, but appears to not bother many others, and that is fine. It seems new people to tequila do like this profile, especially the Reposadoand I have been told by distributors, bartenders and owners of liquor stores that woman really love the Reposado.
My wife Angela loves this Reposado and thinks it's the best tequila she has ever tried. She says it's smooth and easy to drink with no burn. She tastes cognac and says it's enjoyable, and I have heard others say the same.
I also know many seasoned tequila drinkers who like this profile as well. It's all up to the individual. Clase Azul bills itself as a high quality tequilawhich does come in a beautiful unique decanter bottle.
The Reposado has zero burn, is smooth and tastes like cream soda, but even more sugary. It is more balanced than the blanco and is sweet and has a soft finished taste. I understand Arturo waits more than 9 years to harvest his organic agaves, and some say that is why it has such a sweet taste. That could be partly true.Wireless mouse app for chromebook
They then use proprietary yeasts in fermentation, which is possible for more of the sweetness. It then moves on to stainless steel with copper coiled pot stills during distillation. It is filtered three times for smoothness.
Clase Azul says second use barrels encourage a more developed flavor profile, while fresh wood can overwhelm the taste. There seems to be confusion on if a three barrel blend using Cognac, American Oak and Sherry barrels are used in the Reposado, but after researching this and speaking with Arturo, I can say that this is not true. There are YouTube reviews, and others that are incorrect.HOW TO TURN A TEQUILA BOTTLE INTO A LAMP
Clase Azul's Anejo and Ultra aged classes use different barrel techniques, but the Repo is aged, as I explained. I can tell you that when I drink Clase Azul, I don't taste quality, and it's way too artificially sweet for my liking. All Arturo could tell me at this point is that the new NOM "will be part of the intention to integrate the whole chain of value in our company and create more jobs in Mexico.
I don't really know what that is supposed to mean. Once again, there is a lot of questionable stuff coming out of this brand and this distillery.
After trying both classes of this product, I must say that there is a artificial, overly sweet aftertaste that I'm not keen on, and very little agave taste. I enjoyed the bolder Clase Azul blanco over the extremely popular Reposado. I found both the Blanco and the Reposado classes to be very similar in profile Not that everyone feels the same way as me, but I always say "smooth and sweet gets boring REAL fast. NOSE- a clean, sweet, flowery, fruity aroma with a bit of alcohol and a hint of vanilla.
You can taste some agave, but not a ton. There was some pepper and a hint of spice.
